I put off reading Compulsion for a long time. Even though it sounded kind of intriguing, I wasn't sure about it. After reading it, I wholly regret waiting so long to read it because it was absolutely magical and incredible and I loved it so much.

After Barrie's mother dies, she ends up moving in with her aunt on the Southern plantation where her mother grew up. Little does Barrie know that waiting there is a mystery and curse she never could have imagined.

The first magical thing about Compulsion is the setting. There's something so intriguing and charming about Southern towns in books - it's one thing I really liked in Beautiful Creatures and I absolutely loved it in Compulsion. (Side note: Being from a busy suburb in New Jersey probably contributes to why I think small, rural towns are cool in books.) Besides just having charm, the town has a lot of history, contributing to magical gifts that some of the characters have. I always enjoy when there's more than meets the eye about a town, and that's certainly true about this one.

The next magical thing is the characters. As stated before, some of the characters in the stories have magical gifts, which is a part of the greater mystery and history of the town. Magical gifts are magical, obviously, but especially when written into the story as fluidly and mesmerizingly as Martina Boone has in Compulsion. Besides their "powers", the characters has such charming personalities. Barrie didn't grow up in the South and she definitely stuck out as not belonging for a lot of the book. I found it really cute how she had trouble adjusting from her life in San Francisco versus her life in South Carolina. She was always in high heels when everyone else was in sneakers, and she didn't understand how everyone knew everything about everyone. If you've seen Hart of Dixie, it's kind of like that. Besides that, Barrie and Eight were both witty and had some great banter. Their relationship was so swoon worthy. So much swooning.

The last magical thing (that I'm mentioning) is the plot. Compulsion is such an intriguing and gripping story, with all kinds of mystery. I loved exploring the town and the history with Barrie, seeing how the history contributed to what was going on in her life. The plot was both captivating and fast paced, and I never wanted it to end.

Compulsion was an absolutely compelling read! (See what I did there?) I was completely drawn in and mesmerized by the atmosphere and characters Martina Boone was able to create, and I'm seriously yearning for Persuasion. I recommend it to everyone because I just loved it so much, but especially to fans of romance with a paranormal twist and a Southern Gothic feel. GO READ THIS BOOK!
